The Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) is currently responsible for aquifer management, which includes monitoring the state of the aquifers, licensing new boreholes and drawing up management plans, which is done through the Administrations of the Hydrographic Region (ARH) of each zone of the country. Requests for private water abstraction can be made online through SILiAmb - Sistema Integrado de Licenciamento do Ambiente, as well as requests for prior information on the possibility of using water resources and requests for the issuance or renewal of licenses for the exercise of groundwater research and abstraction activities.
